Similarly, in the case of a geometric logo that obvously (to a human) is supposed to contain a perfect circle, the autotrace feature doesn't "see a circle" it doesn't go and get the Ellipse tool and draw a circle that fits, as any human would do. For example, in the case of a human face, the autotrace feature doesn't know that the eyes' pupils are round it just detects a region of similarly-colored pixels and tries to draw a path around them. The kind of autotrace algorithms in Illustrator and programs like it have no shape-recognition intelligence. It's very much a garbage-in-garbage-out process.Īnd even when the "in" is not garbage, there is no real intelligence involved. All that most current autotrace features (including the one in Illustrator) do is detect color differences between pixels of a raster image based upon a user-specified sensitivity setting, and then try to draw vector paths which follow along those detected differences. You can use the autotrace feature which exists in Illustrator or any similar program to try to automate the process of "tracing" the raster image with vector paths.Įither way, you end up with what would more accurately be called a "reinterpretation" of the subject, not a "conversion" of the raster image in the sense of "converting" one file format to another.Īnd that's the key. Or (and this is where the all-too-common misconception about "conversion" comes in). You can even import the raster image and use it as a guide while "tracing" it with vector paths. You can re-draw the artwork using the vector drawing tools in Illustrator or any similar program. The artwork represented by a raster image can be redrawn as vector artwork. There is no automagic "conversion" from a raster image to a vector graphic. You can click to fill the image with any selected swatch from the swatches panel or use your cursors to toggle to different swatches. It must be difficult to convert from illustrator into a vector format since no one has a specific answer. You have created a Live Paint group that you can now roll over the image with the Live Paint Bucket tool, you will see the individual areas highlight as you move around the image. Choose Object>Live Paint>Make or click on the selected artwork with the Live Paint tool.Ģ. Select all of the artwork that you want to use the Live Paint tool with. The Live Paint tool works particularly well with artwork that you have created using the Image Trace tool in Adobe Illustrator.ġ. Paths divide the drawing surface in to areas which can be coloured, regardless of whether the area is bounded by a single path or by segments. Live Paint lets you paint vector graphics intuitively in Adobe Illustrator, by automatically detecting and correcting gaps that otherwise would have affected how fills and strokes were applied. Using the Curve Precision and Angle Threshold sliders you can edit the amont of anchor points used and the angles to make the vector paths simpler and easier to edit. Or go to Window>Image Trace.Īfter tracing you may need to clean up the resulting vector artwork, choose Object>Path>Simplify. Click the Image Trace panel button in the Control panel to open the panel. This will convert the image into an image tracing object.Ģ. With a raster image placed in to your document and selected click the ‘IMAGE TRACE’ button in the control bar. Here is a step by step guide on how to use the Image Trace panel in Adobe Illustrator.ġ. It is useful for turning a drawing in to vector art, tracing logos etc. Image Trace traces existing raster artwork you can then convert the drawing to vector paths or a Live Paint object. With the Live paint tool in Adobe Illustrator you can easily paint areas of your vector artwork that are not necessarily fill areas, the Live paint tool in Adobe Illustrator works really well with items that you have Live Traced on the Adobe Illustrator Artboard. As with most tools in Adobe Illustrator the Image Trace tool is amazing but does have its limits. It works best when the artwork is simple or black and white, Adobe Illustrator will struggle to convert a full color photograph in to vector artwork, it will do it but the results won’t look amazing. Adobe Illustrator Image Trace and Live PaintĪdobe Illustrator has a really useful tool that can enable you to import your pixel based images or drawings and convert them to vector artwork on the Adobe Illustrator Artboard.
